Rabbi of the ARK Centre Rabbi Gabi Kaltmann sat down last month for a unique kosher dinner with Victorian Young Australian of the year Ahmed Hassan and Erdi foundation ambassador Phillip Zajac.

Rabbi Kaltmann and the ARK Centre hosted the dinner to congratulate Hassan for being named the Victorian Young Australian of the Year.

The trio held an enlightening discussion on many issues relevant to young people and faith communities in Victoria.

“Ahmed Hassan is an impressive leader, speaker and visionary with brilliant ideas and insight. His organisation Youth Activating Youth does incredible things for young people in our state,” Rabbi Kaltmann said.

Hassan is the co-founder and executive director of Youth Activating Youth, which offers support to marginalised and disadvantaged young people, particularly those who consistently fall through the cracks.

He founded the now well-established not-for-profit organisation at the age of 18, alongside fellow community leader and current CEO, Ali Ahmed.

Hassan told The AJN, “It was good to catch up with good friends that have a lot in common, and to discuss, what more we can we can do for the community.”

He added, “Philip is a great man, and does a lot for businesses, and a lot for the community and generally giving back.”

Hassan also said that being the recipient of Victorian Young Australian of the year allows him to “do more”.

Rabbi Kaltmann said, “Phillip Zajac and I were privileged to have the opportunity to hear from him and share our vision for the Jewish community and the future of young people.”
