‘Dreaming with eyes open’
'The art installations and creative costumes featured in the school were amazing. It was so great to be back on campus again with the kids.'
STUDENTS at Jewish schools around Sydney got involved in Book Week with costumes, parades, and activities around their favourite books.
Book Week is run yearly by the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA), with this year’s theme being “Dreaming with eyes open”.
Masada College Junior school embraced the theme, with students and teachers coming to school dressed as their favourite Dr Suess character.
Author Mick Elliot spoke to the students about writing, illustrating and producing TV shows for children, and introduced them to his characters and the ideas behind creating his stories.
The children were also tasked with solving a crime, suspects being Dr Seuss characters, and were challenged to find evidence and construct a case.
Masada College Junior School librarian Mrs McLeod said: “Book Week 2022 showed us that using our imaginations to make, create and visualise is not only a life skill, but also fun.”
Meanwhile at Moriah, students participated in Story Quest Adventures and were immersed in the storytelling, music, adventure and interaction with books featured on the CBCA 2022 shortlist.
Primary school students heard from popular children’s author Deborah Abela about her writing and creative process.
At Kesser Torah, the celebrations were a family affair with parents, grandparents and other family members invited onto campus for Book Week events for the first time since the pandemic began in 2020.
Students from the early learning centre and primary school dressed up and enjoyed the activities organised by librarian Rachel Kleiner and the teaching staff.
Students and visitors enjoyed art installations, craft stations and dress-ups, as well as a book fair where the subjects of books on display ranged from science and problem solving to fictional favourites and Hebrew-language comics.
“What a special morning to be able to share with other parents the excitement and creativity taking place at school,” mum Sindy Lowinger said.
