Look good feel well

Ethical diamonds that won’t break the bank

The team at Dream Diamonds knows you want your diamonds to sparkle. But do you know the difference between mined and lab grown diamonds? And if you placed them side by side, would you be able to tell them apart?

Deanne and Kevin Stein.

According to Marilyn Monroe, diamonds are a girl’s best friend. But what does one do when their so-called best friend does more damage than good?

Diamonds are coveted for their sparkle, value and shine, but mining them does a fair share of damage to our environment. For each carat of diamond mined, nearly 10 square metres of land is disturbed, and almost 2700 kilograms of mineral waste is created. Not to mention the harmful effects on air and water quality, ecosystems and the emission of greenhouse gas.

So, what would you say if we told you that you can get all the sparkle you want from a lab-grown diamond?

Lab grown diamonds emit just three kilograms of carbon compared to a massive 75 kilograms for a single mined diamond. They’re also 100 per cent conflict-free. And they are redefining the jewellery industry.

But are they real diamonds we hear you ask?

Yes. They are authentic in every sense of the word. Their physical, chemical, optical and atomic properties are identical to those of mined diamonds. They’re also certified by international gemological institutes – the very same institutions that certify mined diamonds.

The only difference is that they’re created above ground, rather than below.

The Dream Diamond difference

Jewellery has the power to transform the look and feel of a whole outfit. It can help with confidence. It can also be a beautiful heirloom passed down from generation to generation.

Jewellery personifies something enchanting, eternal and in the case of lab grown diamonds, ethical.

Which is why two trusted industry leaders came together to found Dream Diamonds.

Deanne and Kevin Stein.

Kevin Stein is trained by the Gemological Institute of America as a gemologist and brings more than 40 years of experience in the diamond industry, wholesaling to the South African and Australian market since 1983.

Joining Kevin is his daughter Deanne, whose passion is diamonds and jewellery, and who has a genuine concern about the environment and the steps being taken to make the earth a cleaner planet for future generations.

Adrian and Matthew Zamel.

Adrian and Matthew Zamel are the second piece of the puzzle. Many would know the Zamel family who operated one of the largest retail jewellery chains with 135 stores located around Australia for over 50 years. Adrian has been a member of the jewellery industry since 1967 and Matthew offers customers 20 years’ of experience in the diamond business.

Dream Diamonds understands the importance of protecting the environment for future generations. Not only that, but the team also understands that things are getting harder for the younger generation when it comes to the cost of living, explaining that while lab grown diamonds are still evaluated using the 4Cs of colour, cut, carat weight and clarity, and come in the same colours and purity as earth grown ones, lab grown diamonds are more affordable than their mined counterpart.

On top of this, for many young adults, the environment is a key factor in their decision making. So much so that Stein says often, people come into their showroom to buy mined diamonds, and walk out with lab grown.

“This year I have seen an upsurge in demand for lab grown diamonds. Clients come to me for a mined diamond, and then ask about lab grown,” Stein explained. “I always tell them before you decide anything, go and talk to your partner. Every single partner has wanted lab grown because it’s environmentally friendly, more affordable and its sustainable without compromising on quality.”

Uniquely ‘you’

While people may be concerned that owning a lab grown diamond means a stock-standard stone, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Sure, they’re created in a controlled environment, but each and every lab grown diamond is unique and is almost impossible to replicate. In fact, human interaction in creating lab grown diamonds is limited to the introduction of the diamond seed in the growth chamber and ensuring a dust free environment. After this, nature takes over, ensuring a distinctive stone is created every time.

Kevin, Deanne, Adrian and Matthew see a very bright future for the lab grown diamond business – the perfectly ethical alternative to mined diamonds.
