Event shares the power of community
The Empowered Jew, in collaboration with Central Synagogue, hosted an evening titled 'Reaching Redemption'.
Last month, coinciding with Rosh Chodesh Nisan – the month traditionally associated with redemption – The Empowered Jew, in collaboration with Central Synagogue, hosted an evening titled “Reaching Redemption”.
The event brought together community members for a conversation exploring the concept of redemption in both a personal and collective sense.
Opening the evening, Chavi Block, founder of The Empowered Jew, reflected on the weight of the past months.
Since October 7, Jewish communities around the world have faced rising antisemitism, deep communal grief, and an ongoing war in Israel.
“Many of us are feeling shaken, exhausted and uncertain,” she said.
“Yet as Jewish people, we also carry an innate belief that even in the darkest moments, there is purpose, and there is a path forward.”
Drawing on the festival of Pesach, the conversation centred around the idea that redemption is not only a historical event, but a lived, ongoing process.
The Hebrew word for Egypt, Mitzrayim, is rooted in the idea of limitation – reminding us that every generation faces its own forms of constraint, both collectively and individually.
The panel featured three diverse speakers: Rabbi Levi Wolff, a respected community leader and Rabbi of Central Synagogue; Marnie Perlstein, a passionate advocate and voice on social media; and Micaela Ezra, a creative who integrates art, design and spirituality into meaningful expression.
Each speaker brought a unique perspective, offering insight into what it means to move from survival to growth in today’s climate.
Rabbi Wolff spoke about the process of redemption, emphasising that transformation is rarely instant, but rather requires faith, courage and consistent effort.
Perlstein shared her personal journey of turning pain into purpose through advocacy, highlighting the importance of standing proudly in one’s identity even in the face of hostility.
Ezra addressed the emotional toll many are experiencing, offering a message of hope for those feeling stuck or overwhelmed, particularly in the wake of local and global events.
A recurring theme throughout the evening was the role of community. In moments of fear and instability, coming together to support one another becomes essential.
As Block noted in her opening, “There is something powerful that happens when even just two people come together with the intention to uplift one another.”
The discussion also explored the importance of Jewish pride in today’s environment, and how strengthening one’s identity is itself an act of resilience and, ultimately, redemption.
