Seeing the meaningful connections formed between Israeli and Australian teens and the energy of this cohort, I know our future is bright," says ZFA CEO Alon Cassuto.

In an era increasingly dominated by digital communication and virtual interactions, the significance of genuine, face-to-face connections cannot be overstated. This sentiment lies at the core of the Diller Teen Fellows program where young Jewish leaders engage in transformative experiences through the concept of mifgash (encounter or meeting).

The Jewish Community Mifgash (JCM) concluded recently after the Diller Teen Fellows Golan group, Melbourne’s partnership community, visited Melbourne for a week to immerse themselves in the local Jewish community and experience Diaspora Jewish life firsthand.

The two groups gained insights into each other’s lives, traditions and challenges, fostering friendships and solidarity that transcended geographical boundaries.

The Israelis visited schools and synagogues, heard from guest speakers, volunteered at C Care, visited wildlife sanctuaries and learned about Indigenous Australians’ connection to the land, just like Australia’s connection to Israel.

“Our visit to Melbourne was truly eye-opening,” said Neriya, a Golan Fellow. “Experiencing Jewish life in the Melbourne community allowed me to see the common things that hold us together, despite our geographic differences. The mifgash reminded me of the strength we have when we come together as one.”

Melbourne Fellow Sophie Newett reflected, “JCM was the experience of a lifetime. Spending a week with 20 kids from across the world and learning so much from them was amazing. It was so special to show the Golanis what it was like to be a Jew in Melbourne and discuss what Israel means to us.

“It has been a week I will never forget and I am so grateful I had the opportunity to experience this.”

Family host Tammy Tempelhof shared, “Hearing the laughter between our Israeli billet and our sons, was emotional. For all that the Jewish people are going through, the opportunities that Diller has given our children show the resilience of our nation.”

ZFA CEO Alon Cassuto said, “Seeing the meaningful connections formed between Israeli and Australian teens and the energy of this cohort, I know our future is bright.

“Diller reminds us that though we may be a world away, we are one big Jewish family that is closer than ever. If you ever need an inspirational boost I recommend spending some time with our Diller teen fellows.”

The impact of the mifgash extends beyond the duration of the program, influencing participants’ personal and professional trajectories into the future. Armed with newfound knowledge, skills and connections, Diller Teen Fellows emerge from the program as confident, compassionate leaders poised to make a difference in the world.

Melbourne coordinator Sharni Briner said, “JCM is the heart of the Diller Teen Fellows program. It is to form meaningful connections and embrace each other’s differences while working together towards a shared vision of support and safety for Jewish people worldwide.”
