‘Extraordinary’ leadership and commitment
'Her dedication has shaped Youth HEAR into what it is today: a space where young people come together to learn, reflect and build a more compassionate future'
Julia Sussman will step down as chief executive officer of Youth HEAR at the end of this year, eight years after co-founding the organisation with a vision to educate and empower young people to connect with the Holocaust.
Whilst stepping down from the CEO role, Sussman will continue to play a vital role in Youth HEAR’s future, taking on the role of chair of the board in February 2026.
Simone Starikov, who will transition into a director role at Youth HEAR, paid tribute to Sussman’s transformative impact.
“What began as a seed of an idea has grown into a vibrant multicultural community, fostering critical discussion among young people and inspiring thousands through education and dialogue,” she said.
“At the heart of this impact is Julia’s extraordinary leadership, unwavering commitment, and deep care. Her dedication has shaped Youth HEAR into what it is today: a space where young people come together to learn, reflect and build a more compassionate future.”
Reflecting on her time leading the organisation, Sussman said the decision to step down was both difficult and celebratory.
“Youth HEAR has been one of the greatest privileges of my life,” she said.
“When we started this organisation in 2018, our vision was to build something lasting, a movement that could outgrow its founders and continue to thrive under new leadership. After eight years guiding this special organisation, including four as CEO, I am proud and confident that we have reached that milestone together. This was not an easy decision, but it is one to celebrate. It reflects the passion of our volunteers, the unwavering dedication of our staff and board, and the incredible support of our community.
“Along the way, I have learnt so much, met extraordinary people, and been shaped by Youth HEAR and this journey just as much as I have helped shape it. I am deeply grateful to each of you for walking alongside me and this mission.”
Youth HEAR is now inviting applications for its next chief executive officer, as the organisation enters a new chapter of growth and impact under fresh leadership whilst maintaining continuity through Sussman’s ongoing involvement.
