Yonatan Freund was the star of the 2022 Australian Karate Federation National Championships, which were held in Rockhampton, Central Queensland last weekend.

Freund won three gold medals – in the under-21 division for his weight, the senior division for his weight and the NSW state team won their event.

It’s been a phenomenal year for Freund, who was also selected for the World Championships and this year’s Junior World Championships.

Richard Basckin won bronze in the senior division for his weight and was also a member of the NSW state team that won their event.

Both Basckin and Freund will compete at the World University Championships later this year.

“It was a fantastic opportunity for the Australian Karate community to come together after COVID. The last time we all got together was in August 2019,” said CEO of the Australian Karate Federation Ian Basckin.

“After a three year break, the level of competition was phenomenal with some outstanding results. 585 competitors represented their state which made for three days of fun, tragedy, disappointment and excitement, and everyone having a great time.

“The event culminated with the announcement of the National team to represent Australia at the Junior World Championships to be held in Konya, Turkey in October.”

Kerry Saloner, who won silver at the recent Maccabiah Games, took home the bronze in the veterans’ 45-54 division, while Eli Levin participated in the under-10 division.

“Congratulations to all the competitors and officials,” Basckin said.
