Frydenberg: ‘Never again’ a collective duty

FEDERAL Treasurer Josh Frydenberg warned against Holocaust denial and creeping right-wing extremism while opening a refurbished Holocaust exhibition at the Australian War Memorial (AWM) on Wednesday morning.

Originally opened in 2016, The Holocaust: Witnesses and Survivors was developed by the AWM with the support of the Jewish Holocaust Centre and members of the Canberra Jewish community.

It has now been expanded, redesigned and updated with several new items to “ensure a more comprehensive telling of the Holocaust, with a particular focus on its Australian connections”, Frydenberg said.

Commending the AWM for the refurbishment, Frydenberg, whose mother arrived in Australia in 1950 after escaping the Holocaust, said we all have a collective duty to ensure “never again”.

“As the years go by memories fade, there are people who are seeking to diminish the loss of life during the Holocaust, there are countries that are challenging its very existence, there is the rise of the far right in countries around the world, including in some parts of Australia,” he said.

“This is why we are all here, this is why we all must be here.”

Meanwhile, Frydenberg said it was “fantastic” to welcome Israeli President Reuven Rivlin to Canberra yesterday (Wednesday).

“Australia and Israel share a close friendship underscored by our longstanding trade and investment ties,” he enthused.
