Fun of the Purim Spiel
IT’S Purim Spiel time again, and talented members of the Melbourne community are preparing for this year’s musical treat, Anchors Oy Vey.
The Purim Spiel was revived in 2009 after a hiatus of more than 15 years, and provides a creative outlet for Jewish performers.
Producer Dr Talia Boltin said Anchors Oy Vey is loosely based on Purim, but has a nautical theme that takes Esther and Achashverosh on a trip on the high seas, where they encounter the evil Haman.
“It’s very much an ensemble production where we try to give everyone an opportunity to take part,” she said.
“It provides members of the community with a new avenue for involvement.”
Many cast members who took part in last year’s Purim Spiel have returned for Anchors Oy Vey, including Bram Presser, Ronnie Feldman, Daniel Aronov, Josh Gurgiel, Danny Starr and Sheri Greenstein.
Dr Boltin said the Purim Spiel will raise community awareness and funds for Emunah’s social welfare projects in Israel.
Anchors Oy Vey is at the Phoenix Theatre, Elwood from March 22-27. Bookings: www.purimspiel.com.au.
