GLENCORE CEO Ivan Glasenberg (pictured) is among the latest newcomers to the Forbes rich list released last week.

The South African-born Jewish businessman, who acquired Australian citizenship after a brief stint working in Melbourne in the late 1980s, ranked number 125 with a $US7.3 billion fortune – the second richest Australian to make the billionaire’s list behind mining magnate Gina Rinehart, who came in at number 29.

Glasenberg’s debut is mostly linked to earnings acquired after Glencore was floated on the London Stock Exchange last year.

Often described as fiercely private and enigmatic, Glasenberg, 55, has lived in Switzerland for the past 20 years. Other tidbits known about the billionaire is that he was once a race-walking champion of both South Africa and Israel, and missed competing in the 1984 Olympics only because of a technicality.

In a rare interview last year he said of his wealth: “Haven’t thought about it – I’m too busy with the float, but it’s not going to change my life.”

Other Jewish Australians to make the list included shopping centre giant Frank Lowy and family ($4.4 billion) at  number 242, property developer Harry Triguboff ($4 billion) at number 276, property magnate John Gandel ($US3.2 billion) at  number 358 and businessman Solomon Lew ($1.1 billion) at number 1075.

A total of 1226 tycoons made the list this year – including 18 Australians – with the top slot going to Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helu.
