THE Gold Coast Hebrew Congregation will hold a special general meeting on January 18 to discuss its financial status.

After a reduction in bequests from the synagogue’s regular benefactors, president David Rebibou said $90,000 must be raised in order to keep Rabbi Nir Gurevitch on full time. Rabbi Gurevitch’s contract expires in February.

Thousands of letters have been sent to Jewish community members around Australia asking them to support the 52-year-old congregation.

There is speculation that if the money cannot be raised, Rebibou will step down from his position as president.
