In response to the rising concerns over the current Gaza war and the increase in antisemitism at universities, Hatzolah Melbourne has launched of a new initiative – free one-on-one counselling sessions for university students with experienced psychologists.

The current pressures and challenges for Jewish students at universities are overwhelming for many, often leading to feelings of anxiety and stress, according to Hatzolah.

Recognising this need for support, Hatzolah is offering free counselling sessions to provide a listening ear and assistance to those in need.

Hatzolah general manager Josh Wonder said, “Our experienced psychologists are here to support university students who are struggling with anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, or just need someone to talk to.

“We want to ensure that every student has timely access to the support they need during these challenging times.”

Since October 7, Hatzolah has been dedicated to providing a safe and confidential space for members of our community to express their feelings and concerns through one-on-one counselling.

The new program seeks to expand this service to specifically address the needs of students.

The initiative aims to address the broader mental health needs of the Jewish community, aligning with Hatzolah’s mission to provide comprehensive support and greater community care.

“We understand that university life can be stressful, and we want students to know that they don’t have to navigate these challenges alone,” added Wonder.

“At Hatzolah, we’re here to support our community through every step of their journey.”

This comes as part of a broader strategy for Hatzolah’s approach to mental health.

Social worker Sharona Blum has in the past 12 months been employed by Hatzolah to work with post-emergency assistance with a strong focus on mental health support.

Hatzolah will be launching a Mental Health Response Unit in coming months to provide emergency mental health assistance.
