Herzog hosts farewell for departing ZFA president
‘You were there for Israel and the Jewish people in the worst of times’: Isaac Herzog’s tribute to Jeremy Leibler in Jerusalem
Israeli President Isaac Herzog has hosted a farewell at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem for Zionist Federation of Australia president Jeremy Leibler, who is stepping down after eight years.
Herzog praised Leibler’s leadership, wisdom and clarity during what he described as some of the darkest moments for the Jewish community, and recalled his determination to bring the President to Australia at a time when it seemed almost impossible.
“You were there for Israel and the Jewish people in the worst of times, and I hope you’ll be there also in the best of times,” Herzog said.
In an emotional address, Leibler reflected on how October 7 had fundamentally changed Jewish life in Australia, and on the strength the community had drawn from Israel during its darkest days. He spoke about the lasting impact of Herzog’s visit to Australia, and the influence of his family, particularly his father Mark Leibler.
He said he hoped to continue contributing to Jewish life, with a focus on Jewish thriving rather than Jewish survival.
Former Israeli ambassador to Australia Amir Maimon, World Mizrachi chief executive Rabbi Danny Mirvis and Jewish Agency for Israel executive chairman Doron Almog also spoke, on behalf of partner institutions in Israel.
The ZFA said its gratitude for Leibler’s eight years of dedication was difficult to put into words, and that there would be more to say about his contribution in the weeks ahead.
Leibler will formally conclude his term at the ZFA Biennial Conference in Sydney on Sunday, November 22, where a new president and leadership team will be elected. The conference, ahead of the ZFA’s centenary, will feature Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Bret Stephens alongside Australian and international speakers, and will consider the community’s priorities and the future of Australia-Israel relations.
