THICK fog, a maximum temperature of -2 degrees and a massive amount of fresh snow made for ideal but challenging conditions at Mt Buller’s Skyline course earlier this month for the 2018 Maccabi Snow Sports Championships.

Ninety athletes from NSW and Victoria competed in skiing and snowboarding across six age groups at the annual tournament, run by AJAX Ski Club.

In division 5 (year 3 and below) skiing, Clover Rogers was the convincing girls’ winner while Jasper Rogers was equally impressive in the boys’ race.

Faith Green and Adam Weis easily won division 4 (years 4 and 5), Livia Lazarow showed her class to win the division 3 (years 6 and 7) girls’ skiing title, but it was a very tight contest in the division 3 boys’ race, with Avi Wolff edging Charlie Rozenes by just 0.28 seconds in the closest finish of the day, with Jeremy Borsky not far behind in third.

Division 2 (years 8 and 9) was won by Olivia Baron (girls’) and Jonah Bell (boys’), and in the senior division (years 10 to 12), victory went to Alecia Vidor and Jasper Harris.

In snowboarding, Aurelio Orsini won division 3, Sam Wein triumphed in division 2 and Guy Rosenberg won division 1.

Adina Wolters was honoured with a special award for her contribution to Jewish skiing events as a volunteer for more than 15 years.

The tournament was managed by Auscamp and sponsored by Michael Coppel Theatrical, with additional sponsorship of participation awards by Safety Dave.

In the 2018 Australian Jewish Inter-school Championships at Little Buller Spur, sponsored by Arnold Bloch Leibler, the overall individual boys’ and girls’ alpine skiing giant slalom winners were (juniors) Charlie Rozenes and Livia Lazarow from King David School; (seniors) Jasper Harris from King David School and Alicia Vidor from Moriah College.

Harris and Vidor were also the first boy and girl in the senior alpine ski cross event, while Rozenes won the junior boys’ and Allegra Gorog from Mount Scopus College was the fastest girl.

In snowboarding, Moriah College’s Guy Rosenberg was the overall snowboard cross champion, while Sonny Morris from Mount Scopus College took out the snowboard giant slalom title.
