Inherited cancers information day
Wolper grant to support inherited cancer risk event for Sydney’s Ashkenazi Jewish community.
The Wolper Jewish Hospital Health Foundation awarded a grant to Inherited Cancers Australia to support their information and support day, to be held on May 17 in Sydney.
Designed for individuals and families living with inherited cancer risk – with a particular focus on the Ashkenazi Jewish community – this event will address the significantly higher prevalence of BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene variants in this population.
Those variants are associated with increased risk of breast, ovarian, prostate and other cancers.
The day will bring together leading clinicians, researchers and people with lived experience to share practical, evidence-based insights.
Sessions will explore genetic testing, cancer prevention and early detection, risk management, family communication and the psychological impacts of inherited cancer risk.
Additionally, a safe and supportive space will be provided for connection – helping individuals and families share experiences, reduce isolation, and build strong networks of support.
By improving access to trusted information and resources, the initiative empowers participants to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.
“Inherited Cancers Australia’s information and support days provide an important complement to the genetic screening work of the Wolper Jewish Hospital Community Genetics Program, helping to ensure individuals and families have clear, empirically supported information,” said chair of the Wolper Jewish Hospital Health Foundation Richard Glass.
The Wolper Jewish Hospital Community Genetics Program offers free preconception and BRCA genetic screening to members of the Sydney Jewish community.
“Many individuals and families living with inherited cancer risk do so without adequate support or access to the information they need to take action,” Inherited Cancers Australia CEO Sarah Powell said.
“These information and support days are designed to bridge that gap, providing evidence-based information, psychosocial support, and opportunities for meaningful community connection.”
