Step inside The Eve Hotel Sydney in inner-city Redfern and you feel as if you are at a summer holiday resort, thanks to its contemporary design features.

The 102-room boutique hotel opened in February last year as part of the Wunderlich Lane development that includes dining, retail and wellness outlets.

The hotel is part of the Collection by TFE Hotels featuring Hannah St Hotel in Melbourne, The Calile in Brisbane and The Hotel Britomart in Auckland, New Zealand.

The Eve has a modern decor and relaxed atmosphere, starting with the spacious lobby filled with armchairs where check-in is accompanied by a welcome drink.

An arched walkway with views of a garden courtyard leads to the guest rooms, including the sunset balcony rooms which boast a courtyard with table and chairs, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely drink on a warm day. Other rooms have a choice of a balcony or terrace.

Adding to the hotel’s holiday atmosphere is the rooftop 20-metre pool – complete with music piped in underwater speakers – surrounded by lounge chairs and cabanas. Poolside snacks and refreshments can be ordered from the adjoining contemporary Mexican restaurant, Lottie.

For guests with their own car, there’s a basement carpark with valet parking.

In a sunset balcony room there’s a king-size bed, a couch that doubles as a window seat, a bathroom with two sinks, large mirror and a spacious shower. Toiletries are by Saarde – available to purchase in the shop next door to the hotel – and the mini bar is filled with local snacks.

A nice feature is the electric-operated blinds which are activated with the touch of a bedside control. And in a rarity for hotels, room windows open for natural ventilation.

The Eve has a spa called The Parlour Room offering a range of health and beauty treatments.

Bar Julius, the hotel’s European-inspired lobby bar highlighted by a spectacular ceiling artwork by Louise Olsen, is a place shared by hotel guests and locals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The modern menu has proved a hit, with advance dinner bookings recommended.

Redfern has been transformed since 2004, when it was the scene of street riots between First Nations people and police. There has been major urban developments and an influx of professionals and young families moving into the area.

The hotel’s location in Baptist Street, close to Cleveland Street in Surry Hills means there’s a wide choice of nearby cafes and restaurants while being within easy walking distance to Centennial Park, the Sydney Cricket Ground and the Entertainment Quarter.

According to The Eve general manager Ben Mellor, it has been popular with guests from Sydney seeking a holiday staycation as well as those from interstate and overseas combining leisure with business.

He said many guests had extended work trips into weekends, using the hotel as a base for meetings and a place to unwind.

“Corporate guests are working from Bar Julius in the morning, hosting informal meetings in the precinct and staying on through the weekend,” he said.

Last summer The Eve hosted a variety of activities for guests including rooftop sunrise yoga and Pilates and the hotel plans further guest-exclusive events for later this year.

Currently at The Eve until September is the inaugural season of Art House, featuring new artworks by Louise Olsen, daughter of Archibald Prize-winning artist John Olsen who died in 2023 aged 95. She is co-founder of Dinosaur Designs and has been an artist in Sydney for more than four decades.

Her artwork is on display in Bar Julius, the lobby and cloisters and complements the hotel’s extensive collection of contemporary Australian and international throughout its public spaces.
