Iranian and Jewish communities unite

Members of the Jewish and Iranian communities came together at Bondi Beach on Sunday for an evening of solidarity.

“We only have each other,” said activist Ali Beikzadeh in an emotional address.

The Iranian-Australian spoke about how he posted a video on the morning of December 14 that connected with the Jewish community and led to “so many phone calls, so many conversations”.

“Little did I know that several hours after, the worst terrorist attack on Australian soil would take place right here where we are standing, against the Jewish people.

“It is absolutely imperative that we have to amplify this alliance more than ever. The Israeli-Iranian alliance is more imperative than ever – I cannot place enough importance on that.”

While Australian, Iranian and Israeli flags flew high and there was dancing and singing, those who gathered paused to remember the victims of the Bondi terror attack, as well as the Iranian protesters who lost their lives.

“A powerful night in Bondi as hundreds of members of the Jewish and Iranian communities stood together side by side remembering victims, reading names and singing for a future where every person can live in dignity and peace,” said Rabbi Yossi Friedman, who helped facilitate the evening.

Iranian immigrant Banafsheh Fahimipour said, “This is who we truly are: humanity, solidarity and standing together, not hatred.”
