MISS Universe is heading to Israel this year for the 70th iteration of the famous competition.

The Miss Universe Organisation announced earlier this month that the pageant will be held in the southern resort city of Eilat in December.

“Israel has been on our shortlist of host countries for a number of years due to its rich history, beautiful landscapes, myriad of cultures and appeal as a global tourist destination,” said Miss Universe Organisation president Paula M Shugart.

Famed US television presenter Steve Harvey will once again host the competition.

The three-hour event will be broadcast in 180 countries and will end with the current Miss Universe, Mexico’s Andrea Meza, crowning her successor.

“The city of Eilat, together with our partners at the Ministry of Tourism, are delighted and proud to host the Miss Universe events and accommodate the 70-year celebrations in Eilat,” said Eilat’s acting mayor Eli Lankri.

Added Israeli Minister of Tourism Yoel Razvozov, “We in Israel are delighted to host the 70th anniversary celebrations of the iconic Miss Universe pageant, an event celebrating women’s empowerment, optimism, tolerance and desire for excellence, which crosses every geographical and national border.”

In the weeks ahead of the competition, contestants will get to explore the rich history and culture of Israel, with visits to notable locations including the Dead Sea, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
