Israeli medical AI platform eyes Aussie expansion

The length of hospital stays could be slashed and missed diagnoses in busy emergency rooms could become a thing of the past thanks to an Israeli AI platform that helps doctors make better decisions.

Aidoc, founded in 2016, has developed a clinical AI platform that analyses medical scans including CT, X-ray, mammography and MRI images, providing results and prioritising patient cases within two to four minutes.

The Tel Aviv-based company’s technology has demonstrated remarkable results, with up to 98 per cent faster radiology turnaround times, up to 45 per cent increased awareness of critical findings, and up to 40 per cent faster care coordination.

Aidoc senior director for business development Rotem Geslevich said the platform could save lives by ensuring critical cases weren’t missed during busy periods or night shifts.

“If there are lots of people in the emergency department and you need to provide them with a quick result, or during night shifts when there are interns with tonnes of work who might miss some acute cases, we want to highlight the urgent ones and make sure they won’t miss the acute findings,” Geslevich said.

The technology addresses a critical healthcare challenge, with diagnostic errors causing an estimated 371,000 annual deaths globally, while healthcare systems face growing physician shortages and an expanding body of clinical knowledge.

Toddler Joe Massa tragically died at Sydney’s Northern Beaches Hospital in September 2024 after emergency department staff failed to properly assess his condition.

“We could have saved his life by recognising and prioritising his case within two minutes,” Geslevich said.

Unlike traditional AI solutions that solve single problems, Aidoc has built a comprehensive platform integrating multiple algorithms while maintaining one interface for medical professionals. The system also includes mobile care coordination, allowing specialists to receive AI results, radiologist reports and communicate with care teams through a mobile app.

“It’s like having PACs [Picture Archiving and Communication System] in your pocket,” Geslevich explained.

The platform’s CARE foundation model, trained on multimodal data, already powers FDA-cleared applications and can develop new medical applications up to 20 times faster than traditional methods. Within three years, CARE is expected to cover 90 per cent of clinically relevant diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular conditions.

Aidoc also operates aiOS, an enterprise operating system for deploying and governing clinical AI at scale.

“We want to support the entire patient journey, from the second they enter the hospital and take the exam until they leave,” Geslevich said.

The company recently announced a significant milestone with a $US150 million ($225 million) funding round led by General Catalyst and Square Peg, with participation from NVentures, NVIDIA’s venture capital arm. Four major US health systems also participated in the funding, bringing Aidoc’s total funding to $US370 million ($555 million).

The NVIDIA partnership is particularly significant as Aidoc transitions to foundation models – advanced AI technology that can develop multiple algorithms and detect various pathologies much faster than traditional methods.

“Foundation models will soon be as ubiquitous in healthcare as ChatGPT is in general use,” said Aidoc co-founder and chief technology officer Michael Braginsky.

Aidoc currently supports care for more than 45 million patients annually across 150-plus health systems globally, with plans to reach 100 million patients within three years.

In Australia, the company has been working with leading radiology groups including IDX, I-MED Radiology Network and Alfred Health for the past five years. However, Geslevich said the company was now focusing more intensively on the Australian and New Zealand markets.

“We’re being much more proactive, applying to lots of tenders and RFIs, as the Australian market is very much dominated by public tenders,” she said.

The company will showcase its technology at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists conference in Melbourne this October, seeking to connect with more hospitals, clinics and teleradiology practices.
