ISRAELI visitors from Zahal Disabled Veterans Organisation (ZDVO)-Beit Halochem – Israeli Arab Yoseph Haddad, a veteran of the Israel Defence Forces, IDF veteran Amit Shteinhart, and Emily Schrader, an activist against global antisemitism – were special guests at State Parliament last week.

Haddad, a Christian Arab volunteer in the IDF, was wounded in the 2006 Second Lebanon War and lost mobility in his foot. He is the CEO of Together – Vouch For Each Other (TV4E), a not-for-profit organisation uniting Israelis of diverse religious and cultural backgrounds.

Schrader, his fiancée, is his co-worker at TV4E. Shteinhart has faced the challenges of PTSD resulting from his military service.

The trio was hosted by the Parliamentary Friends of Israel, an all-party friendship group that facilitates close ties between MPs, Israel and the Jewish community. Co-convenors of the Friends group, deputy Liberal leader and Caulfield MP David Southwick and ALP MP for Box Hill Paul Hamer, joined other parliamentarians in welcoming the Israelis on February 16.

MPs in attendance included Liberal leader John Pesutto, Southern Metropolitan Region Liberal MLC George Crozier, Southern Metropolitan ALP MLC John Berger, Eastern Victoria Region Liberal MLC Renee Heath, and Western Metropolitan Region Liberal MLC Trung Luu.

The visitors discussed Israel with MPs and were given a guided tour of the Victorian Parliament.
