Jackas bounce back in round two versus Fitzroy
After a first round away loss to Melbourne Uni, AJAX’s men’s Premier B footy team bounced back with a deserving 23-point win over Fitzroy at Elsternwick Park last Saturday.
Their youthful squad – including debutant Brodie Mond – were under the pump when Fitzroy scored the first 3 goals, but they demonstrated composure to work their way back, and lead by a point after two quarters.
Elliot Debinski dominated the ruck contests, backs Adam Caplan and Charlie Hamilton blunted Fitzroy’s attack, and scoring opportunities abounded for AJAX in the third quarter due to applying sustained pressure.
Brad Caplan finished with 3 goals, and 2 goals each were booted by Brandon Efron and Benji Krongold, as the Jackas won 11.16 (82) to 7.17 (59).
In Premier B reserve grade, the Jackas’ development team had a second straight away loss, but were in the game until the final quarter against an experienced Fitzroy side.
Accurate kicking by AJAX’s forwards, well-serviced from the midfield, saw them kick 8 of their 11 goals in the first two quarters, to lead by 2.
Fitzroy had more energy left in the second half, and were able to outplay AJAX to record a 16.9 (105) to 11.5 (71) win.
Noah Micmacher scored 4 goals for AJAX, and in his final match for the club, Ryan White scored 2 goals.
AJAX men’s Sunday Thirds team put their first round loss behind them to post a big 16.9 (105) to 7.4 (46) round 2 victory against the Monash Uni Blues.
Sam Brygel top-scored with 6 goals, and Zev Aron and Gabe Jotkowitz booted 3 goals each.
In women’s Division 2, the Jackettes were aiming for a second straight win, but faced a strong Oakleigh side in round 2, who ultimately won 9. 10 (64) to 2.3 (15).
The Jackettes debuted Casey Aarons, Ashira Silverstone, and Sofia Micmacher, yet their reshuffled line-up began brightly, taking a 1-point lead into the first break.
Oakleigh dominated from there, but AJAX forward Kate Taylor kicked 2 goals in another solid performance, and Hayley Mrocki was rock solid in defence.
