Jackas delight in first home game

A tough 2023 season for AJAX’s senior men’s team is now a distant memory, with the Jackas thriving so far in VAFA Premier C men’s first grade in 2024 under new head coach Wayne Oswald, winning their first two games by big margins.

Their latest win was a 74-point thrashing of Old Carey Grammarians, delighting a big Princes Park home crowd.

AJAX had a red hot start, with Richie Simon, Toby Sheezel and Justin Vogel all dangerous up forward early, helping their team take a 49-13 first quarter lead.

They added to the lead in every remaining quarter, with backline players Corey Zielinski, Elliot Debinski, and Toby Lipton locking down their opponents all afternoon, while Noah Webb and Hutch Davis were intercepting and attacking relentlessly off the defensive half.

Midfielders captain Nick Lewis, vice-captain Kane Nissenbaum, Adam Caplan and Aaron Bryer, consistently won clearances and dominated forward 50 entries, with the help of Max Herzl and Jake Wrobel’s efforts in the ruck.

The top goalscorers in the 147-73 win were Simon with seven, Sheezel with five, and Caplan, named Best on Ground, with four.

Other AJAX teams on the winners’ list last weekend were their Premier C men’s reserve grade side, which soundly beat Old Carey 124-40, the club’s Saturday men’s thirds team, which trounced Whitefriars by 95, and their Sunday thirds team, which were handed a forfeit by Richmond.

A new look Old Camberwell/AJAX women’s division 1 squad were heavily defeated by Parkdale, and the AJAX All Stars all-abilities team lost 15-42 to Williamstown.
