The 2021 dux at Perth’s Carmel School was Aidan Marcov, who achieved an ATAR of 99.75.

He excelled in each of his subjects: Specialist Mathematics, Mathematics Methods, Physics, Chemistry, English Literature, and Religion and Life.

When asked how he felt about that achievement, Marcov said, “Really good … I am very happy that all the hard work I put in has paid off.”

What helped him most in his preparations for his assessments and exams was “doing practice exams, and asking my teachers lots of questions!”

His advice for future year 12 students?

“I’d say, to have something outside of school, like a sport or hobby, that you can do to take a break from all the work of year 12.”

Marcov said he plans to study medicine at university, “and hopefully specialise in neurosurgery in the future”.

In a message from Carmel School’s outgoing principal, Shula Lazar, the class of 2021 – whose median ATAR was 87.95 – was praised and congratulated for finding “just the right mix of academic determination and joie de vivre, embracing all that Carmel had to offer”.

“Many of our year 12 students performed leading roles in our brilliant school musical The Addams Family,” Lazar said.

“Students in this cohort were also runners-up in the ACC senior basketball championships, and reached the finals of both the state debating and mock trial competitions.

“While preparing for the WACE, many still found time to volunteer for various causes, including Green Sunday, Oz Harvest, Bnei and Habonim, and even raise thousands of dollars through ‘Mullets for Mental Health’ – demonstrating their desire to give to the Jewish and wider communities.

“We are proud of all of our graduates and their outstanding, dedicated teachers.

“Our graduates have shown themselves to be young men and women of integrity, who value and live their positive Jewish identity.”
