Kindness Collective, a local initiative delivering food to first responders, frontline workers and community organisations across Sydney, has recently partnered with Sydney-based charity Our Big Kitchen.

Founded by Sharon Gerber in the days following the Bondi Beach terror attack in December 2025, Kindness Collective first established a partnership with Baker Bleu bakery to deliver its surplus food to those in need. For Gerber, this was a simple way for the Jewish community to say thank you to those who help people every day.

“Essentially, we are about bringing happiness and kindness and making sure that those that are out there looking after us, we’re also looking after them, and for them to know that the Jewish community are really good people, even at our most challenging time,” Gerber told The AJN.

Kindness Collective first started as a group of volunteers recruited by Gerber from the Sydney Jewish Mums Facebook group and quickly expanded. In six months, it has amassed over 120 volunteers and has made deliveries to over 500 locations. Having completed over 100 delivery runs, Kindness Collective makes regular deliveries to hospitals, police stations, fire rescue stations, ambulance crews, surf lifesavers and Jewish and non-Jewish community organisations.

“I’m not a religious person, but it means a lot for me to be involved at this level and giving back and facilitating something that others, even within our community, really appreciate, but also outside of our community,” Gerber said.

By partnering with Our Big Kitchen, a community-run industrial kitchen delivering meals to those in need since 2005 and founded by Rabbi Dovid Slavin and Layla Slavin, Kindness Collective is now expanding its operations.

“We are delivering four times a week for Baker Bleu. We are delivering twice a week for Our Big Kitchen out to that kind of cohort, and also those that might be in need in our community, or vulnerable, or just need something to pick them up,” Gerber added.

Entirely volunteer-run, Kindness Collective is looking to expand its reach and venture beyond its current central Sydney delivery locations and partner with other food-related businesses.

Our Big Kitchen will host the first Kindness Collective volunteer team-building cooking event in the coming weeks.
