10-year-old Mount Scopus student Brad Majman made his international kart racing debut in the 2019 SKUSA SuperNationals in Las Vegas – and took home first place.
BEFORE making his international kart racing debut in Las Vegas on November 24 – in the sport’s biggest event called the SuperNationals – Mount Scopus College student Brad Majman was personally hoping for a top-five finish.
His coach David Sera, said he’d be happy if his talented 10-year-old driver for team SDD finished in the top 10 out of 49 competitors in the Micro Swift (7-10) category.
In the end, Majman’s beaming smile in the middle of the podium at the post-race presentation said it all.
He’d not only recovered from qualifying in eighth position by setting the fastest lap times mid-race, but used his rapidly developing racecraft to overtake the two leaders in turn four of the 18th and final lap.
“I was back in the pack after a bad start, but I started trying to catch up, kart by kart,” Majman said while holding the winner’s trophy.
“Then I saw the top three battling away, and I took my opportunity.
“I’d like to thank my dad, my family, everyone at home for their amazing support, and also Pro Karting, [my team] SDD, and Kart Republic.
“I can’t believe I’ve actually won the SuperNats!”
Majman reached a top speed of 70.39kph and posted the quickest lap time of 51.196 seconds in his 14th lap, by which stage he was in third position.
After making his race-winning move, he crossed the finish line in 15 minutes and 51.611 seconds, some 0.701 seconds in front of runner-up Ava Hanssen (USA) and 0.881 seconds ahead of third-placed Spencer Conrad (USA).
Majman’s dad, Stephane, was there to celebrate the moment with him, his three teammates and his coach, and they even got to meet Australian IndyCar star Will Power trackside.
“Brad prepared for the SuperNats by competing in the Cadet 12 level in Victoria, despite him only being 10,” his dad said.
“He’d also won one of his last four races this spring, and finished second or third in the other three.
“Brad has a genuine passion for kart racing, and when you have a passion that drives you, you can usually succeed.”
Majman will compete next in the Todd Road 4-hour Enduro in Melbourne.
