Klinger gets opportunity to impress

MICHAEL Klinger’s chances of a call-up to the national side have received a fillip, with the Redback run machine selected to play for Australia A against England in a pre-Ashes hit-out in Hobart this week.

Klinger will need to do something special if he is to push past Australia A teammates Shaun Marsh, Glen Maxwell and Usman Khawaja in the national selection pecking order, but his spot in the team is evidence that, at the very least, he is again in selectors’ thoughts.

“It’s a small step in the right direction of what I’m hoping to achieve, and it’s certainly better to be there than not,” Klinger told The AJN.

“It’s fantastic to be in the mix and in selectors’ minds, but you’ve got to take the individual side of it and when you go in with a team attitude, individually that’s when you do better anyway.”

After an outstanding stint in England with Gloucestershire and a blistering Ryobi One Day Cup series with the South Australian Redbacks – in which he amassed 380 runs at an average of 76 per game – Klinger has his sights set on finally donning the baggy green.

“I’ve got to make every innings count, and my mentality is to go out and score as many runs as possible,” Klinger said.

“I’ve faced most of the English bowlers before over there, so it’s a new challenge for me to do that in Hobart and I’ll do my best to impress.”
