LARRY David has made his first outing into the ad world, to endorse – or at least, give a very Larry David-style endorsement-by-contradiction for, cryptocurrency exchange company FTX, in a commercial which aired during the Super Bowl.

The ad for FTX – an exchange based in the Bahamas, which said last year that it had a US$10 billion daily trading volume and more than one million users – shows David scoffing at various landmark inventions in history, deploying his trademark “nehh” and shouting in disbelief multiple times, including at John Hancock, the first signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Over the course of 60 seconds, David makes a series of his classic sounds of disdain at, variously, the wheel; the fork; the indoor toilet (“We’re not animals! We go outside”); giving Americans voting rights (“even the stupid ones!?”); the light bulb; moon travel, the Walkman … and finally, cryptocurrency trading.

Whether the ad successfully presents David’s views as being wrong, we leave to your judgment.

Even if it is just for an ad, we’re glad to see more LD in the world.

“Obviously, we think it’s pretty good,” said billionaire FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, who says he plans to give all of his wealth away, including to Democratic causes.
