Leifer: Bail refused, delays continue

THE Israeli legal system, which is quickly losing its credibility, stalled again overnight.

A judge rejected a bail application by Malka Leifer’s lawyers, and decided not to order another psychiatric assesment.

It seems, after another hearing, Leifer is marginally closer to being extradited to Australia to face 74 charges in relation to child sexual abuse.

Her defence team tonight (Monday) claimed that she needed to be released from jail to stop her from sustaining life-long damage.

They also asked for another psychiatric assessment and suggested that she could be released on bail into the care of Rabbi Mendel Shafran, a senior rabbi from Bnei Brak, because the case could take up to a year.

But the judge didn’t accept that suggestion, or any other, and noted that nothing has changed since the previous judge refused bail.

The judge also rejected the claim that her mental health is being harmed by remaining in jail.

Tonight’s hearing came on the back of an explosive week.

Both the psychiatrist and the Health Minister are under investigation for allegedly falsifying reports to help Leifer avoid extradition to Australia.
