THE Ray White Unlimited 2013 Sydney Maccabi Tennis Club Championships were held over the past month, with former junior prodigy Gavin Levy taking out the open title after defeating defending champion Michael Levens 6-2, 6-4 in the final.

Levy, 22, recorded a string of impressive victories on his way to becoming champion, including stellar performances against Michael Shapiro and club manager Steven Loeffler.

Meanwhile, reigning champions Loeffler and Levens went back-to-back in the open double’s event, following the pair’s hard-fought win over Daniel Sheining and Shapiro.

The winning duo produced a solid game at the net, while the runners-up did all they could to stay in the contest with an aggressive approach from the baseline.

In the A1 singles playoff, Russell Gordon defeated veteran Tom Kertesz 6-2, 6-3 in a high-quality encounter, for which Kertesz came out of retirement.

Veteran Kertesz pushed Gordon all the way, but the eventual winner proved too difficult a challenge to overcome.

The open draw featured 17 players, with many having formerly played in Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tournaments.
