Maccabi junior hoopsters begin Sydney season

The Maccabi U14 Cavaliers shoot for glory versus Inner City last weekend.

Maccabi NSW Basketball Club kickstarted their 2022 junior season last weekend when five of their 29 junior teams played in the opening round of the City of Sydney Basketball Association term one competition.

The remainder of Maccabi’s junior teams will follow course this weekend in the Easts Basketball League.

It was a relatively successful start for the club in the city comp, with three Maccabi teams winning matches, including the U18 Mavericks, U16 Rockets and U14 Cavaliers, who were on fire in their 64-8 victory over Inner City.

This year, Maccabi basketball has increased its player membership and number of teams – from juniors to seniors – for the third successive year.

Encouraged by the juniors’ enthusiasm for the sport, the club’s president – former Sydney Kings player Brad Rosen – said he is hopeful of driving further growth through contributions from coaches, the committee and the Maccabi basketball community.

Meanwhile, Maccabi’s men’s teams are already into the fourth round of their first City of Sydney competition for 2022.

On Monday night in the Men’s Premier League, the Maccabi Lakers lost 84-100 to the Throwback Cheetahs, while in Division 1 the Maccabi Kings had a thrilling 43-42 win over Infinity – a field goal by Larry Wagenheim getting them home – and the Maccabi Rockets fell 48-74 versus UNSW White.

In men’s masters action, Maccabi Yesterday’s Heroes had a narrow 29-33 loss against the Inner City Bulls in B division, while in C division, Benny’s Ball had a bye.
