A 29-year-old man has been charged in relation to a brawl during the recent protest at Bondi Beach, where anti-Israel protesters were outnumbered by about five to one.

The clash occurred when pro-Palestinian activists descended on the beach for an unauthorised rally on Father’s Day, while thousands of members of the Jewish community responded with a unified counter-protest on the steps and promenade.

Police were called to the scene at 8am when a scuffle broke out between the protesters. Officers from Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command were supported by the Public Order and Riot Squad, Operation Odin and the Central Metropolitan Region High Visibility Patrol to keep order.

No arrests were made at the time, but last week investigators released images of three men they believed could assist with enquiries into the incident.

On Friday, detectives then arrested a 29-year-old man at a home in Edmondson Park. He was taken to Liverpool Police Station and charged with affray and common assault. He was granted conditional bail to appear at Liverpool Local Court on October 9, where he will face charges relating to his alleged involvement in the altercation.

Waverley mayor Will Nemesh criticised the organisers for holding the “solidarity with the Sumud Flotilla” rally without approval, describing it as highly provocative given Bondi’s large Jewish community.

NSW Jewish Board of Deputies CEO Michele Goldman described the planned protest as “a wildly inappropriate use of public space, designed to provoke and harass the many Jewish residents who call Bondi home”.

In response to chants of “from the river to the sea” during the protest, members of the Jewish community raised Australian and Israeli flags and sang both nations’ anthems in what was a predominantly peaceful and uplifting response. Pro-Palestinian organisers maintained the event was intended as a peaceful show of solidarity and urged calm following the confrontation.

Police investigations into the matter continue, with authorities still seeking to speak with individuals who may have witnessed the events.
