Mike Zervos, CEO of B’nai B’rith Courage to Care has agreed to “Race Against Racism” running a marathon in early October to raise funds and awareness for Courage to Care.

He will be taking part in the actual Melbourne Marathon on October 2, and running 42 kilometres. He explained that he agreed to run the marathon in one of his weaker moments adding that, “Running 42kms at my age is certainly a physical and mental challenge but I’m inspired listening to our volunteers and other stories of Upstander behaviour,” he said.

Zervos ran a full marathon last year around the bayside area, raising more than $11,000 that went towards helping Courage to Care deliver Upstander programs to schools across Victoria.

There is currently an unprecedented demand for its Upstander programs from both secondary and primary schools across the state.

The program empowers students to stand up against racism, discrimination and prejudice in their schools and communities.

Donations to support Marathon Mike will assist Courage to Care Victoria in delivering Upstander programs to Victorian schools, free of charge.

Zervos told The AJN that running this marathon is “my way of raising awareness and hopefully donations to support our work”.

He added, “I’ll certainly take inspiration from our volunteers who show the courage to care every time they visit a school. Perhaps I should have asked to be sponsored by the blister!”
