MediPlus Academy, empowering OUR community to save lives

This community start-up, founded and directed by two young Sydney Jewish entrepreneurs, has hit the ground running, delivering over 70 high-quality first aid courses for more than 15 community organisations and hundreds of individuals, empowering the community with the skills, equipment and confidence to save lives.

The Sanhedrin states, “He who saves a life, it is as if he has saved the entire world.” MediPlus Academy is giving every individual who passes through its doors the power to save an entire world.

Australia has one of the lowest rates of first-aid training in the world, with fewer than five per cent of people having received training. MediPlus Academy is trying to change this.

Founded by registered nurse Ezra Israel, 26, and partnered by 2017 Moriah College vice-captain Rick Schlessinger, 22, MediPlus Academy is a first aid enterprise which provides numerous accredited courses and equipment, aiming to be the community’s “one-stop shop for all first aid needs”.

As community first responders, both Israel and Schlessinger have witnessed medical emergencies where those close to the patient lacked the knowledge or confidence to help. On occasion, this resulted in a potentially preventable fatal outcome.

Did you know that in the event of a cardiac arrest, for every minute without CPR and defibrillation, the chance of survival drops by 10 per cent? MediPlus believes in empowering the community with the skills and tools to provide early intervention to patients, before first responders or paramedics arrive, wherein effective and immediate CPR increases the chance of survival three-fold.

Would you know, for example, what to do if your child gets bitten by a snake on a hike, or if your mother collapses, your baby starts choking or your grandfather starts to have chest pain?

Israel and Schlessinger know that although the community understands that having these skills and knowledge are vital, many people find traditional first aid training boring. The team aims to make lessons more interactive and interesting by incorporating realistic scenarios and having enthusiastic educators, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

“We know people are busy. To make these courses more accessible, our online modules let you work through the content at your leisure, so you no longer need someone droning at you for eight hours face-to-face,” Schlessinger said. “We pride ourselves on making our courses engaging and interactive.”

MediPlus Academy boasts a wide range of more than 20 nationally accredited courses including HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in [RS1] the education and care setting.

The organisation currently employs several experienced professionals within the community including Jess Liebovitz, a registered nurse at Prince of Wales Hospital, who is a co-creator and facilitator of their recent and well-received BabyAid workshops. These three-hour interactive workshops are designed for new parents, grandparents, and carers to develop vital first aid skills specific to paediatric medical emergencies.

MediPlus will also soon launch its second unique workshop, SafeSitter, which aims to equip babysitters, nannies and carers with the confidence to administer the first aid to young children. This also provides guardians with peace of mind, ensuring that in the event of an emergency, your infant’s carer will be equipped with the most up to date medical knowledge to handle any medical emergency.

Medical emergencies can arise at any time, and in any place, and MediPlus is there to give everyone the ability to stay safe and protect your loved ones.

As Israel states, “Our aim is to empower and ensure that every individual in the community feels confident that they have the skills and knowledge to recognise and manage a medical emergency … we encourage everyone to be proactive, not reactive, in learning first aid, thereby promoting a sense of safety and wellbeing within our community.”
