The recently refurbished Melbourne Holocaust Museum (MHM) emerged victorious in the “Public Architecture” category of the 2023 Victorian Architecture Awards announced last week.

The building has garnered recognition for its architectural excellence in the aforementioned category.

The Victorian Architecture Awards provide a platform for public and peer recognition of innovative architectural work, promoting architects and their contributions across Victoria and Australia.

MHM CEO Jayne Josem said, “Our building, designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects, stands as an institution dedicated to preserving and memorialising the Holocaust.

“Every detail within the space was designed with intention by Kerstin and her team, to communicate Holocaust experiences in a safe environment. We are very proud the building has been recognised with such a prestigious award.”

A representative from KTA said they are “delighted” that the MHM has been awarded at the 2023 Australian Institute of Architects, Victorian Chapter.

“Throughout the design process, light played a pivotal role, symbolising illumination and knowledge. Considering that education lies at the heart of the MHM’s mission, it was only fitting to utilise light as a recurring theme, creating inviting and functional spaces, particularly for education, research and events,” the representative told The AJN.

“We are grateful for the collective efforts of our dedicated project team and the unwavering support of Jayne Josem and the Holocaust Museum. It is through such collaborations that we can forge impactful spaces that leave a lasting impression on all who engage with them.”
