MONTEFIORE Home is set to start construction on a $100 million+ expansion of its Randwick campus early next year, including three new buildings and an exciting retail precinct.

The AJN can reveal that the first building, on the corner of King and Dangar Streets, will provide an additional 90 residential aged care rooms dedicated to the latest innovations in dementia care, and will include a retail precinct on the ground floor that opens onto a public plaza, available to both residents and the general public.

The other two buildings, to be located along King Street, will provide a mix of 79 one, two and three bedroom independent living units, for elderly individuals and couples wishing to optimise their independence while also having direct and immediate access to the amenities available at the Randwick campus.

The massive development, which is expected to take around two to three years to complete, will see Moriah College’s Early Learning Centre – which has been located at the Randwick site for the past 17 years – relocate to the Moriah campus in Queens Park to accommodate the works.

No existing buildings will be demolished as part of the project.

Speaking to The AJN this week, Montefiore president David Freeman said demand for accommodation and care for the aged in our community “continues to escalate”, and warned that with an ageing population, it “will only heighten in the future”.

“I am extremely pleased that the Montefiore Board of Management had the foresight to embark on a complex master-planning process for the Randwick campus so we are in a position to expand services as they are required ,” Freeman said.

He said building a selection of independent living units is the “final piece of the puzzle” in Montefiore’s goal to provide “the entire continuum of care across the aged care-journey”.

“The capital gained through the sale of the independent living units will allow Montefiore to build the new residential care building dedicated to supporting residents with dementia,” Freeman added.

“Community members who are minded to consider this extra service should anticipate receiving more information about this exciting development in the very near future.”

Montefiore has achieved master-plan approval from the NSW Department of Planning for the three buildings, including development application (DA) approval for the new residential aged care development.

It has lodged a DA with Randwick Council for the two independent living unit blocks and is expecting approval “within the next few months”.

Existing residents have been assured that they will not be affected by the building works.
