Remembering Munich
Moriah’s moving ceremony
Moriah College has a beautiful memorial surrounded by 11 trees – one planted for each athlete who died at the Munich massacre.
THIS week marked 50 years since the Munich massacre, where 11 Israeli athletes were murdered at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.
Moriah College has a beautiful memorial surrounded by 11 trees – one planted for each athlete who died.
To mark the 50th anniversary, high school students visited the memorial during their Hebrew/Jewish studies/Jewish history classes for a short commemorative ceremony.
All year 10s had tefillah at the site, followed by the ceremony.
The students heard the story about the events leading up to, and including, the tragic massacre. They joined in prayer, read the names of the victims and laid stones on the memorial. The Shofar was blown and they all sang Hatikvah.
