A SMALL, fragile woman was heralded a hero at the German Consulate in Melbourne on Tuesday.
German-born Ditha Bruncel Slowey, 85, was recognised for providing “physical and spiritual comfort” to a Jewish family, the Zuckers, during the Holocaust.
Her heroism was discovered by descendants of the surviving family members, Oved Zucker and Farida Zucker, who travelled to the ceremony from New York.
Oved thanked Mrs Slowey in front of a small audience, which included German Consul-General Dr Anne-Marie Schleich and Jewish community representatives.
