In Israel this week, they’re all gaga over sport.

Forget Bibi, Lieberman and the general trials and tribulations that come with living on the edge because the Israeli heroes of the day are a bunch of tennis players – Dudi Sela, Harel Levy, Andy Ram and Yoni Erlich.

Last weekend, the quartet delivered one of the greatest feats ever by an Israeli sporting team – a 4-1 hammering of Russia in the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup.

Israel will now play Spain on the weekend of September 18-20 for a berth in the final. Venue is yet to be determined, with a further complication being that Rosh Hashanah falls on the same weekend.

What with the tennis just finished and the Maccabiah about to start, Israelis are spending their summer holidays obsessing about sport.

Which is how it should be.
