Tasmania’s Bay of Fires attracts visitors from interstate and overseas to experience the beauty of its tranquil bays and sandy white beaches fringed by iconic lichen-covered granite boulders in shades of orange, red and yellow.

The Bay of Fires is a photographer’s paradise stretching about 50 kilometres along the north-east coast of Tasmania, a three-hour drive from Launceston.

In September, Melbourne couple Ruth and Gary Trytell joined Tasmanian photographer Luke O’Brien’s three-day photography tour of the Bay of Fires to hone their skills – Ruth with her iPhone and Gary with a new Canon EOS mirrorless camera.

Using the Panorama Hotel in St Helens as their base, the tour started each day at 5am to photograph spectacular sunrises over Binalong Bay.

During the day they explored rocky outcrops along the coastal terrain and observed birdlife at close quarters on beach walks, before returning after dark to the Binalong Bay area to learn the best ways to photograph the night sky.

“We really enjoyed touring around the Bay of Fires, with every day being totally different,” said Ruth.

Gary added: “It was great to learn how to use all the features of my camera in spectacular settings during the day and the clear starry skies at night.”

The couple enjoyed the flexibility and relaxed atmosphere of the tour which took them off the beaten track while honing their photography skills.
