Orner siblings again dominate

Apart from the racing, it was another wonderful community event. The social event for the kids was at the Mount Buller AirZone on Sunday evening and a cocktail party for the adults was held at AJAX Ski Club.

The 2023 Australian Maccabi Jewish Snow Sports Championship were held earlier this week at Mount Buller. With the snow conditions on the mountain quite poor, the event had to be moved from the usual Skyline race track to the far more challenging Summit race track. The conditions there were mild but foggy and the snow was soft.

There were 74 participants competing across six age groups, and as expected there were some very close races. The standout skiers for a second year were siblings Sarah and Henry Orner, who were the fastest female and male skiers respectively across all divisions.

The event was well supported by the majority of Jewish schools, with Mount Scopus, King David, Yavneh and Bialik all participating, as well as students from non-Jewish schools.

The event concluded with a fantastic presentation, which was held at the AJAX Ski Club.

A new award in honour of skiing stalwart Debbie Grace was presented. The Debbie Grace Memorial award for the female skier who improved the most between their first and second run was awarded to Georgie Jolson.

The event was organised by the AJAX Ski Club and run by Auscamp, with thanks to Michelle Coppel from Michael Coppel Presents, who was the major sponsor again this year. Natalie and David Cooper sponsored the participation awards.
