Children’s Discovery has been named as a finalist in the “Oscars” of Australian science.

The prestigious Eureka Prizes are awarded annually by the Australian Museum and have been at the forefront of recognising the country’s leading scientific minds for the past 32 years.

Children’s Discovery, a charity focused on closing the gap on STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) education for young children, is one of three finalists in the STEM Inclusion category.

It has been recognised for the development and delivery of the Little Bang Discovery Club, in partnership with public libraries across Australia, training local facilitators to provide high-quality STEM experiences that engage 80,000 children annually.

“Children’s Discovery develops engaging STEM-based experiences for children and their families that excites curiosity and builds confidence to further explore and understand their world,” CEO Adam Selinger said.

“This is a wonderful acknowledgment of the collective impact we have made together with our library and education space partners across the country. It is a celebration of the seeds of inspiration we have planted within the hearts and minds of aspiring scientists, engineers and innovators.”

The Little Bang Discovery Club aims to capture and develop children’s natural inquisitiveness through a series of engaging hands-on activities using everyday objects. Children and their accompanying adults experience the foundations of science: collecting, classifying, measuring and experimenting.

Children’s Discovery’s programs reach children between the ages of 3-12 years across Australia, particularly those that have been historically under-represented in STEM education and employment. Developing the capability of libraries has been instrumental to reach and include this audience.

The winners of the Eureka Prizes will be announced at a gala dinner on August 23.
