NSW JBD AGM

Ossip re-elected, Prue Car a no show

After securing his re-election Ossip said, "I am immensely proud of what the JBD has achieved over the past 12 months and I'm very grateful for the opportunity to continue leading our wonderful community," Ossip said.

David Ossip was unanimously re-elected as president of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies (JBD) at its annual general meeting (AGM) on Tuesday night, which was attended by over 120 community members.

Deputy NSW Premier Prue Car was due to attend the AGM, but she was replaced by Minister for Local Government Ron Hoenig at the last minute.

As expected, Hoenig was asked a series of questions about Labor’s recent position on Israel.

“It is only when I became a member of Parliament that I truly appreciated the reach and effectiveness of the Jewish Board of Deputies,” Hoenig said during his keynote address.

“It is an outstanding organisation which plays an absolutely critical role in safeguarding and advancing the interests of the Jewish community.”

After securing his re-election Ossip said, “I am immensely proud of what the JBD has achieved over the past 12 months and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to continue leading our wonderful community,” Ossip said.

The rest of the JBD’s board of directors were re-elected, with Robert Gregory missing out after he had put himself in the running for one of the five positions.

The AJN understands Gregory, who is the public affairs director of the Australian Jewish Association (AJA), used his two minutes of speaking time to praise the AJA, while also suggesting a JBD “cartel” was responsible for shutting him out.

“He did a good job of shutting himself out,” an unnamed source told The AJN.

Also at the AGM, nine Executive Council of Australian Jewry councillors were elected or re-elected, including Jillian Segal, Robert Goot, Peter Wise, David Knoll, Lesli Berger, Jane Feller, Melissa McCurdie, Nathalie Samia and Yair Miller.
