TEL AVIV — A Qassam rocket fired from the northern Gaza Strip on Wednesday evening landed in an open area near the southern town of Sderot.

There were no reports of injuries or damage and the security forces began searching for the rocket’s landing site.

Seven Palestinians were injured on Tuesday by Israeli artillery fire, after Palestinian snipers affiliated with al-Qaeda opened fire at labourers engaged in engineering work near the border fence.

Last Friday two Qassam rockets hit open areas in the Shaar Hanegev Regional Council. In response, Israel Air Force jets attacked two weapon smuggling tunnels in the southern Gaza Strip and a building used as a weapon manufacturing facility near Gaza City.

There were no reports of injuries on the Palestinian side.

The attack came shortly after the Permanent Mission of Israel to the United Nations filed an official complaint with the Security Council and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon over the increased rocket attacks emanating from Gaza.

Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Professor Gabriela Shalev, wrote in the complaint that 13 rockets and mortars had been fired towards Israel in September alone, this in addition to multiple attempts by Palestinian terrorists to infiltrate Israel.

Shalev urged the UN to condemn the attacks and said Israel would continue to defend itself.
