Pollies’ Chanukah greetings

Tony Abbott, Prime Minister

I SEND my best wishes to everyone celebrating Chanukah this year. This is a special time for the Jewish community.

In homes around Australia, Jewish families will come together to light the Chanukiah and give thanks for all that they hold dear.

For centuries, this tradition has symbolised the triumph of light over darkness. It is a simple expression of faith and confidence in the future.

At this time, we are reminded that religious freedom is a settled part of the Australian tradition. As a nation, we have found unity in our diversity and respect in our differences. Together, we have built a nation that is free, fair and tolerant.

May our country continue to serve as a beacon of hope and optimism for people right around the world.

I wish you an enjoyable and peaceful celebration. Chag Sameach.

Victor Dominello, NSW Minister for Citizenships and Communities

IT gives me great pleasure to extend my best wishes to the Jewish community of New South Wales on the occasion of Chanukah or the ‘Festival of Lights’.

This ancient feast is a powerful affirmation of Jewish identity, and represents the community’s strong commitment to peace, unity and respect.

Celebrated over eight days, the lighting of the menorah symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, and the importance of faith in helping us overcome even the greatest of obstacles.

Each year the Premier proudly hosts the annual lighting of the menorah at Parliament House, in association with the Yeshiva Centre attached to the Chabad NSW Headquarters, and the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies.

Jewish cultural celebrations, like Chanukah, are firmly enshrined in our State’s annual programme of multicultural events.

I hope that the universal message of love and respect demonstrated during Chanukah adds to a greater understanding and respect between all communities in New South Wales.
