WITH just 48 hours’ notice, more than 120 members of the Jewish community came together at Kehillat Kadimah on Sunday to pray for and show solidarity with firefighters and victims of the bushfires that have ravaged parts of NSW.

The spontaneous nature of the event was stressed by organiser Rabbi Reuben Klein, who explained that “prayer is not only the regimented daily services, but a natural outpouring of the soul in response to tragedy and distress”.

He said, “In our era of 24-hour news feeds, we cannot afford to lose touch with the basic human trait of sensitivity to pain and suffering.”

Rabbi Dovy Rapoport stressed the community’s responsibility to help as part of broader Australian society.

Money was raised to assist firefighting units in NSW.
