Plenty attend outdoor pilates class

After a postponement due to wet weather, and a venue change to Queens Park, Maccabi Life’s inaugural Pilates in the Park event on April 3 proved worth the wait.

The sun shined, as 26 people enjoyed a free 45-minute session with instructor Alex Cohen from Bay Pilates.

Maccabi Life aims to promote health and well-being in the community, and has upcoming events, including a Colour Run on May 1, and a group hike in the Royal National Park on May 22.

LAWN BOWLS

Maccabi NSW bowlers impress

Maccabi lawn bowlers have shone in early April at state and club tournaments.

Representing Double Bay Bowling Club, Barbara Shotland, Iris Kampel, Pam Stein, and Marna Morris contested the NSW Women’s State senior 4s championships in Tamworth, beginning with wins over Newport Beach (14-12) and Castle Hill (17-9), before bowing out in a close semi-final against Ballina (14-18).

Morris teamed up with Kampel in the State Senior Pairs, also in Tamworth, where they came up against a strong Inverell pair who handled the fast greens better, to beat Double Bay by 21-13.

In a men’s state Veteran 4s tournament at Wallsend, Rod Silber from St Ives was in a team representing Zone 9, which reached the semi-finals.

In Double Bay’s 2022 Handicap Singles tournament on April 10, Michael Fischl edged Barbara Shur in the final by 21-15.

And in the Double Bay Drawn Pairs final, Sol Caganoff teamed up with Sandy Desiatnik to defeat Paul Collins and Barry Shine by 25-9.

Caganoff was impressed by Desiatnik’s consistency throughout the tournament, while Collins earned praise for contesting his first final.

TRIATHLON

Lindop leads the way in Maccabi April triathlon

After two weeks of ongoing rain, the sun decided to come out to greet 14 eager Maccabi triathletes on April 3 at Heffron for the monthly race.

Newcomer Elan Miller came out of the pool with an excellent swim leg time of 11 minutes, followed by Roy Cohen, Tim Lindop and Alan Kaplan.

Lindop took the lead shortly into the bike leg, with Cohen and Kaplan close behind.

Craig Pager was making up for lost ground after a slow start that saw him at least five minutes behind the leader, and posted the quickest cycling time of 32 minutes.

Lindop continued his great season, running the 5km final leg in just 20 minutes to win the race.

Kaplan chased down Cohen early in the run to earn second place, followed by Cohen in third, and Pager, who managed fourth.

Other good performances were by Guy Miller, who is preparing for the Maccabiah Games, and Brett Yudelman, who is returning to form after a spell.

The next Maccabi NSW triathlon will be over a sprint distance, on May 22 at Heffron.
