Premier in Chanukah spirit
"Here in Victoria we understand uniquely – our diversity is what makes us great and our compassion is what unites us," says Jacinta Allan.
Jacinta Allan has taken part in her first Pillars of Light event as Victorian Premier, joining in the celebration on Monday night to kindle a gigantic menorah at Federation Square.
Rabbi Gabi Kaltmann, the convenor of the annual Pillars of Light ceremony, recited the brachot for the Chanukah candles as Allan lit the menorah.
“Here in Victoria we understand uniquely – our diversity is what makes us great and our compassion is what unites us,” said Allan. “People from every corner of the world have chosen Melbourne and Victoria as their home – their home, a place where they can practise their faith and celebrate their culture.”
Rabbi Kaltmann said afterwards, “It was a true honour to host Premier Allan at Pillars of Light, a multicultural celebration of Chanukah. Her words and presence were comforting and inspiring. Having the Premier light the menorah and light up Fed Square was uplifting.”
