FROM Jerusalem to Antarctica, Waikiki to Peru, AJN readers love to travel for their holidays.

Melbourne speech pathologist Sharon Flitman’s trip to New Zealand last year resulted in a dramatic photo taken at Cathedral Cove in the North Island which has been judged the winner of The AJN‘s 2019-20 holiday photo competition.

Flitman, 29, wins a gift certificate for a two-night stay at historic The Reef House in Palm Cove, 25 kilometres north of Cairns, in tropical Queensland.

The Reef House is a boutique resort set in colonial-style complex with 67 rooms and suites. It is situated on the beachfront in the heart of Palm Cove, which has a relaxing seaside village atmosphere.

Cathedral Cove is one of the “must visit” sites on New Zealand’s Coromandel Peninsula near Hauraki Gulf and is accessible only by a walking track or by boat.

“The walk along the cliff top to the Cove is beautiful,” said Flitman.

Her winning photo features Amelia Iliamo, a Jewish friend she met during the holiday, posing on one of the rocks at Cathedral Cove.

Last year Flitman, a keen photographer, won the best sunrise/sunset photo for her shot taken on New Year’s Eve at Mordialloc beach in Melbourne.

This year’s sunset winner is Jonathan Shaw of North Caulfield for his entry taken in the Point Addis Marine National Park near Anglesea on Victoria’s Surf Coast.

Jonathan Shaw’s sunset photo taken in the Point Addis Marine National Park in western Victoria won the best sunrise/sunset photo.

“We were at Jan Juc for Melbourne Cup weekend as we had a wedding at a winery,” he said.

“The scenery around there is all beautiful, but there aren’t too many places to see sunsets. I looked on the map and guessed that Point Addis might just do the trick.

“So I jumped in the car and when I got there the sun was just setting. I spotted this bizarre tree stuck in the sand. I was shooting straight into the sun, but it came out alright.”

Shaw wins a gift certificate for two nights’ accommodation at Accor’s new Art Series hotel in Perth, The Adnate.

With a giant mural by Melbourne artist Matt Adnate stretching to the top of the 27-storey hotel, art is a dominant theme in the luxury 250-room property.

The winner of The AJN‘s reader competition to correctly select the winning photographs is Billy Low, who takes home a prize pack of recently-published travel books.
