President of the Rabbinical Association of Australasia and Rabbi of St Kilda Shule, Rabbi Yaakov Glasman met with the Deputy Premier of Victoria, Jacinta Allan, to discuss efforts to enhance multiculturalism and combat antisemitism as well as other forms of prejudice and hate.

The meeting, which took place in the Deputy Premier’s office at Treasury Place, followed her recent visit to the Beth Weizmann Jewish Community Centre.

During the private one-on-one meeting, the importance of education in the fight against antisemitism and prejudice was discussed. Rabbi Glasman told The AJN that he highlighted the grassroots efforts of St Kilda Shule in this area, including hundreds of annual school visits that come to St Kilda Shule, which provides an opportunity for students to become acquainted with the Jewish community and visit a synagogue for the first time.

The Deputy Premier was “appreciative” of the work done by both the rabbinate and St Kilda Shule in “promoting peace and celebrating diversity” in Victoria, shared Rabbi Glasman. He told The AJN that Deputy Premier Allen has “championed multiculturalism” in her own local community of Bendigo, adding that “she has recognised the contributions made by diverse communities to the multicultural tapestry of the state.”

“It was an absolute privilege meeting with Victoria’s Deputy Premier,” said Rabbi Glasman.
