Laughter and kindness

Rabbi Rabin observes the power of clown doctors

"...providing a safe space where laughter and tears coexisted harmoniously."

Rabbi Daniel Rabin witnessed the transformative power of humour and compassion, after getting the opportunity to watch clown doctors at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Rabbi Rabin, chief rabbi at Caulfield Shule, was invited to meet and observe two clown doctors, Dr Sunny and Dr Fantastic, as they did their rounds on the ward. Adorned in vibrant costumes, the clown doctors made their way through the hospital corridors to bring laughter, games and warmth into an otherwise gloomy environment.

During his visit Rabbi Rabin found that their work was not solely about entertainment, but about “connecting with children on a deeper level”.

He told The AJN, “The clown doctors listened intently to the stories, fears, and dreams of the patients they visited, and embraced the children’s emotions with empathy, providing a safe space where laughter and tears coexisted harmoniously.

“I can say with certainty that it touched my heart in ways I could never have anticipated. Witnessing the transformative impact of joy and compassion in the hospital setting was truly remarkable. The clown doctors create a space where the heaviness of illness fades, and the lightness of laughter prevails,” he added.

Rabbi Rabin’s encounter with the clown doctors serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of laughter and human connection, especially in the face of adversity. Their dedication and ability to bring lightness into the lives of young patients demonstrate the profound impact that a little joy can have on healing and wellbeing.

The clown doctors continue to make a difference in the lives of children and their families, spreading laughter and kindness throughout the hospital. Their efforts serve as an inspiration to the community, demonstrating the transformative power of compassion and the ability to bring magic into the lives of others.
